The personal Twitter account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hacked on Sunday morning. The incident caused a stir in the country. At around 2 am on Sunday, strangers posted on Prime Minister Modi's personal Twitter account asking to buy bitcoins. They said that Bitcoin has been legalised in India, and have posted links that the government bought 500 bitcoins and are distributing them to the public.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) immediately informed Twitter and the account had been restored after a while. The Prime Minister's Office appealed to the public by tweeting "The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored."

On Sunday, Twitter clarified that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken the necessary steps to secure the handle as soon as he became aware of the hacking. The PM's office said it had 24x7 open lines.

A Twitter spokeswoman said their investigation had revealed no signs of other affected accounts at the time. As soon as this information was received, the tweet was deleted and it was revealed that Prime Minister Modi had restored his Twitter account.
