World Bank CEO Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday suggested strengthening of safety and security measures across Mumbai’s public transport system, especially its suburban trains. She said security must be improved by installing CCTV cameras, improving lighting and increasing police presence in trains and on station premises.

During her visit to the city, Georgieva travelled in a second class compartment of an Andheri-bound local train form Churchgate to Dadar and interacted with the women commuters. Upon asking one thing the women would like be to improved in the suburban trains, Georgieva received unanimous answer: upgradation of safety and security measures in suburban trains.

“Women feel safer to travel in police presence. We received positive response about improvement in the quality of service. Women commuters have mostly demanded security, closed doors, so that people don’t hang out, some air-conditioning or better fans. We from World Bank support Mumbai commuters so people can have safer and more enjoyable travelling experience,” said Georgieva.
