Lucknow, Aug 12 : The Congress on Saturday sought an apology from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the deaths of more than 60 children here in Gorakhpur.

A Congress delegation led by senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) chief Raj Babbar visited the Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Gorakhpur on Saturday and met the family members of the 63 children who died over a period of five days due to encephalitis and a reported lack of oxygen supplies.

The leaders also visited the hospital's paediatric ward.

Talking to reporters later, Azad said that the tragedy was caused due to carelessness of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state and demanded Adityanath's apology.

The senior Congress leader also said that the two ministers responsible for healthcare and medical education should immediately resign.

"These callous people cannot be allowed to continue" the Rajya Sabha member added.
