Jammu, Nov 18 : Night temperatures improved in the Jammu region while temperatures in Ladakh dropped to below freezing point, a Met department official said on Saturday.

The night's lowest temperature in Leh and Kargil towns was minus 6.4 and minus 6.0 degree Celsius respectively.

"At minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, Leh town was the coldest in Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day. Other places where the minimum temperatures fell below zero degrees in the state were Gulmarg (minus 3.8) and Pahalgam (minus 0.6).

"Srinagar city recorded a minimum of 2.9 while Jammu city recorded 11.2 degrees Celsius.

"Night temperatures improved throughout the Jammu region due to cloud cover. Bannihal, Batote, Bhaderwah and Katra towns recorded 4.6, 5.0, 4.8 and 11.5 as the minimum temperatures respectively," the official added.

Overnight light rains in the Kashmir Valley brought further relief to a long dry spell that had continued here for nearly three months.

Meanwhile, fresh snowfall in the Zojilla Pass area led to the closure of the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh Highway that connects Ladakh with the rest of the country.
