Dubai  : The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has joined the UN Global Compact (UNGC), the worlds greatest corporate sustainability initiative, becoming the first government utility to join the drive and adopt its 10 basic principles in the fields of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

DEWA said the move was in line with its keenness to support global sustainability initiatives and programmes as well as to enhance its leading position among sustainable organisations worldwide, the report said on Friday.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DEWA, said that the initiative came in line with the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to achieve integrated sustainable development in the UAE.

The UNGC is a voluntary drive aiming to encourage companies and organisations worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially-responsible policies. It is considered the world's largest organisational corporate sustainability initiative and includes around 13,000 organisations from over 160 countries worldwide.
