Shillong, Feb 19 : Meghalaya's main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) on Monday promised to provide free education to children hailing from Below Poverty Line families up to graduate level, if voted to power in the February 27 assembly elections.

It also promised to replicate cable cars like those on the Blue Mountain in Australia's Sydney and cable bogies as in Nainital for the high precipices and ridges of Meghalaya.

Former Chief Minister and UDP President Donkupar Roy released the party's 12-page manifesto which focuses on a corruption-free and secure Meghalaya, affordable education and healthcare, employment, women and children's security, besides sustainable development.

"Combating corruption shall be our endeavour. Institutions of Lok Ayukta and Ombudsman shall be welcomed," the UDP manifesto said.

Seeking votes from music-lovers and sportsmen, the UDP also promised to set up Academics for Music and Sports.

"We propose to provide free education to children hailing from the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the state at least up to the graduate level. The infrastructure in all institutions will be upgraded. Government schools and colleges will be strengthened to ensure that they become the preferred institutions by the students in the State," the manifesto said.

On employment, the UDP promised to increase the age bar for entry to government jobs from the present age of 27 years to 32 years with five years more relaxation for SCs/STs of the state.
