Japan's Chief of Joint Staff visits Kolkata

Kolkata, March 7 (IANS) Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, Chief of Joint Staff, Japan Self Defence Forces (JSDF), interacted with officers of the Indian Army's Eastern Command during a two-day visit here that ended on Wednesday.

Admiral Kawano, who arrived here on Tuesday along with a delegation of five JSDF officers, met Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Abhay Krishna at the Eastern Command Headquarters Fort William.

The two General officers stressed upon the recognition of bilateral strategic partnership and broad-based cooperation in defence and security fields. They also discussed the current dynamics in South East Asia.

Lt Gen Krishna presented Admiral Kawano a memento to commemorate the first of such visits by the JSDF's Joint Staff chief.

The visit is part of the bilateral tours as agreed during the visit of the Indian Defence Minister to Japan last September under the framework of "India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership".

Admiral Kawano also visited the historic Eastern Command Museum and Library at Fort William.
