Mexico City   Mateus Uribe and Jeremy Menez struck twice each as Club America thrashed Pumas UNAM 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the 2018 Mexican football league's Clausura tournament.

Uribe got America off to a quick start, scoring in the 1st minute of Wednesday's match, reported Efe news agency.

The Colombian added another goal in the 38th minute, while Menez scored in the 30th and 61st minutes for coach Miguel Herrera's America squad.

Chilean Nicolas Castillo scored the Pumas' lone goal off a penalty in the 44th minute.

The Pumas, however, struggled to get back on track and the visitors took control of the match in the second half.

America's defence played with tremendous patience, keeping the Pumas off balance and putting their side one step closer to the semi-finals.

The second leg of the quarter-finals will be played on Saturday at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, where America hopes to use their home advantage to advance to the final four.
