Restoring J&K people's faith in democracy our top priority: Congress

Srinagar, July 3 (IANS) The Congress, which held a marathon daylong session of its leaders from across Jammu and Kashmir here on Tuesday, said its priority was to restore people's faith in the democratic process.

Senior Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni held daylong deliberations with around 100 party leaders and legislators.

Stressing that the Congress' policy was not to damage any other political party, state Congress unit chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir said: "Right now our priority is to restore the faith of the people in the democratic process."

"During the last two years, developments have taken place which have shaken the confidence of the people in the democratic process. All of us need to work for restoration of that confidence among the people," he said.

Mir said that Governor's rule can never become a viable alternative to a democratically elected government.

"We appeal the state governor to ensure that all necessary steps are taken so that a democratic government assumes power in the state," he said.

Congress leaders have already scotched rumours that the party was working to join hands with the Peoples Democratic Party for forming an alternative government in the state.
