Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins India's first gold medal at Youth Olympics

Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the first gold medal for India at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina by lifting a combined weight of 274kgs in the Men's 62kg Group A event of weightlifting on Tuesday.


Lalrinnunga put up a massive effort to scoop the gold as he lifted 150kgs in his last attempt in the clean and jerk round to record a total of 274 kgs. In the snatch round, Lalrinnunga has lifted 120kgs in his first attempt and then lifted 124kgs in the third attempt after having failed int he second.


With 124kgs after the snatch round, Lalrinnunga was already on top of the moment after which, he showed great mettle in lifting 142kgs and 150kgs in clean and jerk to win the gold medal.


This is India's fourth medal in Buenos Aires with Shahu Tushar Mane, Mehuli Ghosh and Tababi Devi Thangjam winning silver medals in shooting and judo, respectively.


While Lalrinnunga won the gold medal in the Men's 62kg Group A event weightlifting event, Sneha Soren finished fifth in Women's 48kg Group A weightlifting event after lifting a total of 151kgs. Mexico's Yesica Yadira Hernandez Vieyra won the gold medal after lifting 171kgs.


In the third medal event of the day, Srihari Nataraj managed a sixth-place finish in swimming Men's 100m Backstroke Final after clocking 56.12. The gold medal winner, Kliment Kolesnikov of Russia clocked 53.26.


In table tennis, Archana Girish Kamath won both her Preliminary matches on the day, while Manav Thakkar lost one and won the other.


Manav first lost to Iran's Amin Ahmadian 4-1 (9-11, 12-10, 6-11, 7-11, 8-11) but then came back to defeat Malaysia's Javen Choong 4-2 (11-6, 7-11, 13-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5).


Archana was in a rampant form as she first beat Egypt Marwa Alhodaby 4-0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9) and then defeated Slovakia's Aleksandra Vovk 4-1 (12-14, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8, 11-5).


In badminton, Vaishnavi Jakka Reddy lost her second Preliminary Round match 18-21, 21-23 to USA's Jennie Gai but Lakshya Sen brought up another victory by defeating Ukraine's Danylo Bosniuk 23-21, 21-8.


In Hockey 5s, Indian women eked out a 2-1 victory over Ukraine while the men thumped Austria 9-1.
