New Delhi, Oct 9 (IANS) Maritime traditions scholar and historian late Lotika Varadarajans 50 photographs on the Indian coastal communities are on display at the India International Centre (IIC) here in an exhibition that opened on Tuesday.

Taken between 1979 and 2010, the photographs cover traditions, practices and cultures of boat building and navigation from littoral India, ranging from Gujarat to Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar islands to Lakshadweep.

They also provide a glimpse of the seagoing lives of Indian coastal communities from the pre-2004 tsunami era, IIC said in a statement.

Varadarajan, who passed away in 2017, is known for her elaborate ethnographic fieldwork on the coastal cultures of South Asia and its islands.

The exhibition will run from October 9-15 at the IIC.
