Kolkata, Dec 18 (IANS) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Tuesday issued a notice to city's 116-year-old iconic Jewish bakery Nahoum's, among other city cake shops, to improve their working standards following an inspection ahead of the Christmas festival, an official said.

"We visited cake making units of Nahoum's, Kathleen and some other cake shops. The cake mixers were found working without gloves and not using hand sanitiser for which they have been issued an improvement notice," Atin Ghosh, Deputy Mayor of KMC told IANS.

"They have been instructed not to compromise with the quality of the products and improve the work conditions in the factory. If they do not follow the directions, they will face a case according to the Food Safety and Standards Act," he warned.

Nahoum and Sons, founded by Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Baghdadi Jew, in the year 1902 in central Kolkata's New Market area, is one of the most sought after destinations for the city cake lovers.

The cakes baked here invoke love and nostalgia for many. Finely-baked fruitcakes, lemon tarts, rum balls are in high demand, particularly during the festive seasons.
