Lucknow, April 14 : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday credited the success of demonetisation to the "high moral character" of the people of India.

Speaking at an event here, Yogi said that while many countries had failed miserably in their demonetization efforts, India succeeded in doing so under the vision and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as people knew that "after a little suffering", the country would benefit in the long-term.

"When demonetization happened, all hell broke loose, people suffered some hardships but despite prompting and provocation by the media, people standing in long queues never uttered a word against the Prime Minister or the decision to demonetize high value currency notes, as it was evident to them that the motive behind the move was just, noble and with far reaching consequences," he said.

Citing the example of Venezuela where riots broke out under similar conditions and emergency was clamped, the Chief Minister said it was a tribute to the honest spirit of the people of India that they faced short term hardships but decided to bear them for long term good.
