India recovered from 18 for 4 in the 10th over to post 252 all out before restricting New Zealand to 217 to win the fifth ODI by 35 runs in Wellington on Sunday. India won the five-match series 4-1 and this victory will be sweet revenge after the batting flop show in Hamilton on Thursday.

New Zealand suffered several setbacks early in their chase. Mohammed Shami, who had been rested for the fourth ODI, came back to rock the Black Caps. He and Pandya struck to reduce New Zealand to 38 for 3 in the 11th over. The early blows included the wickets of Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and the dangerous Ross Taylor.

Kane Williamson and Tom Latham then tried to steady the ship for New Zealand but India never allowed the pair to get away. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kedar Jadhav bowled tight lines after the pacers had done a commendable job up front.

Jadhav, the compulsive partnership breaker, got rid of Williamson before Chahal struck twice in quick succession to remove Tom Latham and Colin de Grandhomme.

New Zealand still pinned their hopes on James Neesham and Mitchell Santner but India were determined to defend their total after a brilliant middle-order fightback.
