Sonowal reviews India-Bangladesh meet preparations

Guwahati, Oct 10 (IANS) Close on the heels of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit and signing of bilateral agreements, Assam Chief Minister Sonowal here on Thursday asked the Act East Affairs department of the state government to work hard for the success of the two-day India-Bangladesh stakeholders' meet, starting here on October 22.

Sonowal reviewed the preparations and urged state and central government departments to create an atmosphere of cordiality and warmth to strengthen the bilateral relations, which were based on deep historical and fraternal ties.

The meet, which has been given the tagline -- trade and connectivity -- will focus on creating a level-playing field for stakeholders of the two countries. It will also discuss and create awareness on opportunities made available by the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement and the access to Chittagong and Mongla Ports.

Recalling the shared bonds of history, culture and language, Sonowal said Assam and Bangladesh had a network of communication system through road, rail and water.

"But in due course of time the rail link was snapped," he said and added the meet would help revive the age-old communication ties between Assam and Bangladesh.
