Ranchi, May 18: Jharkhand on Thursday witnessed mixed response to a traffic blockade called by the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) to oppose the Adani power plant and amendments in two state land acts.

The JVM-P workers hit the roads in districts and more than 1,000 supporters were arrested as a preventive measure. The traffic blockade by JVM-P activists had no impact in urban areas, though passengers who had to travel to other parts of the state had a tough time as buses did not ply on long-distance routes.

The JVM-P workers, supported by the Congress and Left parties, blocked the Ranchi-Patna National Highway at Tilaiya. Hundreds of vehicles got stranded due to the road blockade.

The JVM-P also called traffic blockade to demand the release of its legislator Pradeep Yadav, who was arrested last month allegedly for inciting villagers against the Adani power plant proposed to be set up in Godda district.

The JVM-P is also opposing the amendments made to the two state land acts -- the Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act -- as the amendments facilitate the use of the agriculture land for non-agricultural purposes.

"The traffic blockade was successful. People voluntarily supported our call. The state government is trying to acquire land forcefully against wishes of the people," said JVM-P President and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi.
