Air pollution levels have risen significantly in several metropolitan cities, including the national capital, Delhi. People are suffering from many problems due to inhalation of polluted air. The number of people suffering from respiratory diseases in OPDs in hospitals has increased by 30 per cent. People suffer from persistent coughing, shortness of breath, as well as pneumonia.
Dr Ashutosh Shukla, Senior Director, Department of Medicine, Max Hospital, Gurugram, said the number of patients suffering from respiratory problems at the hospital has been on the rise for the past two weeks. Tests revealed pneumonia in some patients. Infection in the lungs is said to cause pneumonia. Its initial symptom is shortness of breath and cough. If the cough increases day by day, the advice of a doctor should be sought. If pneumonia is not detected quickly it can be fatal to the patient.
Dr. Ajay Kumar, a pulmonologist at GTB Hospital in Delhi, said 20 percent of people coming to the hospital show symptoms of pneumonia. These patients are said to have difficulty breathing. Asthma sufferers claim to be more likely to suffer. People with asthma should always keep an inhaler with them. The number of respiratory illnesses is increasing every year this season, said Dr. Avi Kumar, a pulmonologist at Fortis Escorts Hospital. This time too the cases are increasing rapidly. COPD, bronchitis problem is seen in people. He said it was necessary to wear N-95 masks to protect against rising pollution. He advised not to go for evening walks.
In case of pneumonia or lung infections, the flu vaccine must be taken. The vaccine is said to reduce respiratory problems. The vaccine is available in all hospitals.
