Salt adds flavor to dishes but too much salt can be detrimental to health. It can damage the intellect and memory. A study reveals that salt  may have an adverse effect on blood circulation and neuronal function in the brain.

Although it has already been revealed that nerve cells are stimulated due to the increase in blood circulation, it is not known how this happens. To identify this, Georgia State University researchers recently conducted a study on the hypothalamus in the brain with the help of advanced imaging and surgical techniques.

The hypothalamus plays a key role in eating, drinking, regulating body temperature, and reproduction. Salt is essential for strict control of sodium levels in the blood. That’s why researchers  examined it. When we eat salt, various mechanisms happen to reduce sodium levels. The body stimulates the nerves to release vasopressin and shares the milk in controlling salt levels. But, when the nerves in the hypothalamus are stimulated, the blood vessels constrict instead of increasing blood flow. As a result blood flow to the brain is reduced.

Researchers say that Alzheimer's and Paralysis patients have decreasing blood vessels in the cortex of the brain. Sodium levels in the body increase for a long time when we intake salt containing food. Nerve cells are also said to be in a longer state of excretion due to reduced blood flow to the brain. 50-60% of people with high blood pressure are high salt eaters. Eating too much salt in this way over-stimulates the neurons that release vasopressin, blood flow to the brain and increases the risk of tissue damage.
