Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the 40-year-old Sarayu Nagar National Project in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, at the push of a button.
The irrigation system is now expected to benefit the lives of millions of farmers in the eastern part of the state who are facing water scarcity and irrigation problems, especially since the project was stuck in the government pipeline for almost four decades before Narendra Modi's government. The Modi government has taken active steps to expedite this.
The Prime Minister arrived in Balrampur at 1 pm on Saturday accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Water Resources Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and other senior officials and politicians. In the photos shared by ANI news agency, you can see Modi reviewing the project prototype before the inauguration.
Welcoming the Prime Minister, Water Energy Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted that the 6,623 km long irrigation canal system would benefit 29 lakh farmers in nine districts of the region by irrigating over 14 lakh hectares of land - Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur & Maharajganj.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has congratulated the Prime Minister for clearing a project that has been stalled in the pipeline for nearly four decades. ‘This project was sanctioned the year I was born,’ the Chief Minister said. 'The scheme got wings when Prime Minister Narendra Modi came. He has cleared more than 100 projects trapped in the pipeline across the country. '
Highlights of the Sarayu Nahar National Project:
The project will connect five rivers - Ghaghara, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga and Rohini - to ensure proper utilisation of water resources in the area. 6,600 km of sub canals are connected to 318 km of main canal. The project will irrigate over 14 lakh hectares of land and benefit 29 lakh farmers in more than 6,200 villages. The canal system is also expected to protect the eastern UP districts from recurrent floods.
The Sarayu Nahar National Project started in 1978, but was eventually delayed due to lack of budget support, inter-departmental coordination and adequate oversight. The project was brought under the Prime Minister's Krishi Sinchai Yojana in 2016 with the aim of completing it on time two years after Prime Minister Modi came to power at the Centre. The Prime Minister said the project, which had been unfinished for four decades, was completed in just four years.
