Kolkata, July 5 (IANS) Instances of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee being compared with iconic souls are rising among the Trinamool Congress legislators.
After party MLA Nirmal Maji compared her with Maa Sarada and Allah, another legislator Biswajit Das has likened the chief minister to Rani Rashmoni -- the legendary philanthropist and founder of iconic Dakhineswar Kali temple near Kolkata, famous for its association with Ramakrishna Paramhansa.
Incidentally, Biswajit Das, the MLA from Bagda Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, is a turncoat BJP legislator from the state who joined Trinamool Congress soon after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls. BJP has already filed a case in the Calcutta High Court demanding Das's disqualification as an MLA under the anti-defection law.
At a party rally in his own constituency late Monday evening, Das said that just as the memories of Rani Rashmoni are restored in the hearts of people even so many years after her demise, so will be Mamata Banerjee even after centuries. "The way our chief minister has worked for the poor and downtrodden is simply exemplary. I have talked to so many people before and after talking to them I always witness the shadow of Rani Rashmoni in Mamata Banerjee," he said.
According to BJP state spokesman in West Bengal, Shamik Bhattacharya, even after joining Trinamool Congress betraying the people of Bagda constituency who voted for him as a BJP candidate, Das is yet to make a place for himslef in the state's ruling party. "So, he is resorting to such flattery with home coming to the forefront. The example of Nirmal Maji comparing the chief minister with Maa Sarada seems to have encouraged Das," he said.
Now again the same question is surfacing that even after such flattery comments causing embarrassment for Trinamool Congress in public, why is the chief minister silent on this issue. After Belur Math, the global headquarter of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, issued a strong rejoinder to Nirmal Maji's comments comparing chief minister with Maa Sarada, wide and spiritual consort of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, a section of Trinamool Congress leadership censured him. However, the chief minister herself maintained a total silence in the matter.
Das shifted from Trinamool Congress to BJP in 2019 and got elected as a BJP candidate from Bagda Assembly constituency in the 2021 elections. However, in August 2021, that is within three months of the election he joined Trinamool Congress claiming that he was not comfortable with BJP. However, officially in the records of the West Bengal assembly, Das continues to be a BJP legislator.
