The Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu government to create clear rules for all political campaigns, meetings, and rallies held across the state.
The direction came during a hearing on a petition by Thamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the political party launched by actor Vijay. The petition, filed by party leader CTR Nirmal Kumar, requested police permission for TVK's rallies from September 20 to December 20, 2025.
Justice N Sathish Kumar said political events must follow the law and that leaders—including Vijay—are responsible for managing crowds and public safety. He added that groups like pregnant women and differently-abled people should be protected, and any damage to public property during rallies should be paid for by the organizing party.
TVK argued that other political parties were given permissions more easily, while their events faced stricter conditions. In response, the police said they had allowed TVK rallies but with rules in place. They also submitted photos from a previous rally in Trichy to support their case.
The court will continue the hearing on Septembe 24.
