Santiago Vergara, who spent two years with Honduran first division football team Motagua, has died in his native Argentina after a battle with leukemia, the Tegucigalpa club said. He was 26.
"The board of directors, the technical team, the players and the administrative staff regret to announce the death of Santiago Vergara," the club said on social media.
Vergara, who played with Motagua from 2015-17, was a skilled midfielder who was among the best foreign players the team has known in many years.
In March 2017, Vergara was forced to stop playing because of his leukemia, for which he sought treatment in Spain and in the US.
