New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) In the backdrop of clashes between lawyers and police at Delhi's Tis Hazari court complex last year, the Delhi government is soon going to install 200 CCTV cameras in the courtrooms.

The contentions were made by a committee constituted in pursuance to directions issued by the Supreme Court in 2018 to install CCTV cameras within the court complexes in the national capital. The excerpts from the meeting were accessed by IANS.

Citing a letter by Public Works Department (PWD), the city government asserted that, as of now, Tis Hazari court complex has no high-end cameras in the courtrooms but "an estimate of 200 CCTV cameras are to be installed" soon.

In November last year, a disagreement between lawyers and police officers turned violent at the Tis Hazari court complex. As a consequence, scores of police personnel and lawyers got involved in violent clashes, leaving many injured.

Months after the incident, security threat still looms large over the courts in India. A bomb, which exploded at a Lucknow court earlier this week, left three persons injured.

In 2016, a clash had erupted at Rohini court after a security staff allegedly abused and assualted a lawyer.

Beside Tis Hazari, Dwarka court has invited tender for installation of 120 CCTV in the courtrooms.

A total of 2,451 cameras have been installed at district courts in the national capital.

Among all, Rohini court has the least number of cameras while Karkardooma has the highest.

During the meeting, the Delhi government resolved that "district court may be requested through Delhi High Court to initiate necessary action" for implementation of apex court's order.
