An Army helicopter carrying General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Defence Staff of India, crashed in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. 14 people were on board including Bipin Rawat, his crew and family members.
The Central Cabinet convened an emergency meeting as soon as it became aware of the incident. The Union Cabinet is meeting in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Defence Minister Rajnath has explained to the Prime Minister about the accident.
Meanwhile, government sources said that Rajnath Singh will make a statement in Parliament on the incident. The Air Force has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin will also leave for Coimbatore this evening at five o'clock in the evening. From there Stalin would go to Wellington Military Hospital.
Army, Police and Firefighters rushed to the crash scene after the accident and carried out the rescue operations. The Helicopter departed from the Army Center in Willington. The death toll has reached 11. The Indian Air Force has confirmed the accident.
